Liquor Policy ReviewCouncil adopted a new policy for liquor outlets in Kelowna. Read the Liquor Licencing Review Report outlining the findings related to existing policies and the changes to liquor licensing.
After more than a year of study and consultation as part of the Liquor Policy Review, the policy guides such things as the siting and density of liquor primary establishments, as well as procedures for licensing applications. Council also rescinded a moratorium imposed in 2010 on rezoning applications for new liquor primary establishments downtown with a capacity greater than 100 patrons.
Report Findings:
The review recommends a number of areas of opportunity to improve on existing conditions, including the following:
- Reintroducing “soft closings” for the 2011 tourist season.
- Supporting an increase in alternative entertainment venues.
- Exploring opportunities for increased transit availability, taxis and vehicle circulation.
- Establishing formal entertainment districts.
- Introducing a new Council Policy #359
for reviewing liquor licensing applications
All of the above recommendations are intended to help create a more vibrant, safe, fun environment at and around all liquor establishments – for both residents and tourists alike.
