The proposed Parkinson Recreation Park Multi-use Trail is envisioned to connect the existing Rails with Trails corridor to the proposed Dayton Street overpass over Harvey Avenue (Highway 97) and beyond to the intersection of Sutherland Avenue and Burtch Road.
This corridor is being designed to accommodate multiple users, incorporating universal accessibility design standards.
Closure Tennis courts located outside the east entrance of the Parkinson Recreation Centre will be temporarily closed for facility upgrades and to accommodate construction of the trail. The tennis courts are expected to re-open on May 1.
All tennis programs scheduled to start on April 6 and 7 will be relocated to the Basil Meikle tennis courts adjacent to the Apple Bowl.
Background In keeping with the City's vision for an active transportation network throughout Kelowna, a series of multi-use pathways and sidewalks are being developed to provide sustainable cycling and pedestrian oriented infrastructure. These will link key areas of the city and connect neighbourhoods, town centres, parks and schools.
Parkinson Recreation Centre (PRC) is bordered by Mill Creek, a vast amount of green space, and sports fields strategically connected with numerous pathways.
The multi-use trail, proposed along the eastern boundary of the park, is an ideal link between neighbouring communities, regional transit, PRC, Rails with Trails, and local businesses.
This corridor will particularly be oriented to the needs of commuter and recreational cyclists as it passes through the recreation park, and provides area residents improved access to recreational opportunities.
Public Consultation
A public open house was held in November 2009, for the project during the Preliminary Design Phase where residents were invited to come out, view the concept plans, help identify issues and inform the design process. See the display panels.
