Beginning Tuesday, August 3, the entrance to Parkinson Recreation Centre at Harvey Avenue will be closed to accommodate the overpass construction. The closure will be in effect until September 3. Parkinson Recreation Centre can be accessed from Spall Road to Parkinson Way.

Construction will take place Monday through Friday from 7 am to 10 pm. Pedestrian and cyclists are to avoid shortcutting through the site; signage restricting access to the construction area is posted. Parkinson Recreation Centre will remain open during construction.

Handicapped parking has been temporarily relocated in close proximity to the original location. Watch for signage designating handicapped parking. Ramp access to the entrance of Parkinson Recreation Centre will be maintained.

Transit users should expect minor delays on transit route #9 Shopper Shuttle effective immediately. Visit www.busonline.ca throughout the summer to view alerts for further information on transit impacts in the area.

Introduction
The Parkinson Recreation Park Multi-use Trail is envisioned to connect the existing Rails with Trails corridor to the Dayton Street overpass over Harvey Avenue (Highway 97) and beyond to the intersection of Sutherland Avenue and Burtch Road.

This corridorpdf icon is designed to accommodate multiple users, incorporating universal accessibility design standards.

Background
In keeping with the City's vision for an active transportation network throughout Kelowna, a series of multi-use pathways and sidewalks are being developed to provide sustainable cycling and pedestrian oriented infrastructure. These will link key areas of the city and connect neighbourhoods, town centres, parks and schools.

Parkinson Recreation Centre (PRC) is bordered by Mill Creek, a vast amount of green space, and sports fields strategically connected with numerous pathways.

The multi-use trail, being constructed along the eastern boundary of the park, is an ideal link between neighbouring communities, regional transit, PRC, Rails with Trails, and local businesses.

This corridor will particularly be oriented to the needs of commuter and recreational cyclists as it passes through the recreation park, and provides area residents improved access to recreational opportunities.

Public Consultation

A public open house was held in November 2009, for the project during the Preliminary Design Phase where residents were invited to come out, view the concept plans, help identify issues and inform the design process. See the display panels.

A public information session was held on May 25, 2010 at Parkinson Recreation Center for residents to view the final design drawings and learn the schedule of construction.  View the display panels under 'Open House Panels' on the right.
