Electronic Voting
The general election in the City of Kelowna is conducted using electronic voting machines.
Voting for candidates is still done by hand, on specially prepared ballots, but the actual vote counting is handled electronically. Voters feed their ballots through electronic voting machines and the machines are programmed to read the ballots automatically. Manual counts of each and every vote are no longer required.
This means that the vote tally can be calculated at each voting place within minutes of the last voter casting his or her ballot at the close of the polls. The final City-wide tally and the unofficial results are then available far more quickly than in the days of manual counts.
Election employees at each voting place are trained in the use of the voting machines, and they are there to assist any voter to make sure his or her ballot is counted.
