Solar Community
As a SolarBC Community, The City of Kelowna is looking to harness the power of the sun and be a leader in renewable energy use. In 2008, the City was named Solar Community of the Year.
Residents are encouraged to live greener and consider installing a solar hot water system. With more than 2,200 hours of sunshine per year, Kelowna has an abundance of reliable and renewable solar enegy, that will help cut hot water heating costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Solar Incentives
SolarBC has details on the more than $3,000 in financial incentives which are available to offset the cost of residential solar hot water systems. Builders and developers as well as schools and municipalities are also eliglible for rebates.
Solar Projects
The City has embarked on several solar projects in recent years including solar-powered lights at a variety of community locations, solar-powered parking kiosks and solar-powered pedestrian signals. Solar is a vital part of the City's goal to reduce overall energy consumptions in municipal buildings by 20 per cent by 2010.
Solar Steering Committee
The City of Kelowna has partnered with FortisBC , Terasen Gas and the Okanagan Environmental Industry Alliance (OEIA) to explore both civic and community solar initiatives.
