Acquisition/Dedication Strategies

Current Land Ownership

The proposed linear park corridor is just over 6 km long; preliminary plans indicate this would accommodate more than 14 kilometres of trail network. The current breakdown of property ownership in the corridor is:

  • 2.6 km is currently in public ownership,
  • 2.5 km is private developable property and,
  • 1 km is private single family ownership.

Acquisition/Dedication Strategies for Private Developable Land and Private Single Family Ownership

  • dedication of rights-of-way for pedestrian/maintenance access at time of subdivision, rezoning or development permitting.
  • acquisition through purchase including:
    • buying the required area of park directly from the owner,
    • buying the entire property when it comes on the market, subdividing it, dedicating the park portion and re-selling the remainder.
  • donation
  • density bonusing in return for providing amenities.
  • conservation covenants that include a public route of access.
